چکیده

M ODERN IP routers have flow export features which are typically used for traffic measurement, accounting, and billing purposes. One such flow export technology is Cisco’s NetFlow [1]. These features transmit timestamped IP flow information in a timely fashion from the routers to collection stations. The timestamps indicate the time at which each flow’s initial and final packet was forwarded. Although NetFlow’s timestamps have millisecond granularity, they have usually been considered to be mere accounting data and have not generally been utilized by collection software to calculate the data transfer rates of individual IP flows. In this extended abstract we investigate the efficacy of IP flow rate analysis to summarize the data transfer rates experienced by individual TCP application data streams. We use the flow start and end timestamps to estimate the flow’s duration and, in turn, compute the average data transfer rate. We then plot these flow rates in a time series to determine whether or not such visualization exposes important characteristics of Internet traffic flows as they cross a network’s border. If it does, such analysis may have significant operational use, perhaps aiding in the detection of network problems and determining whether or not Quality-ofService agreements are being satisfied. Our past experience with flow-based passive measurement in production networks has shown it to be a practical methodology capable of being operated continuously and analyzed in near real-time [2]. We hope to determine whether the addition of flow rate analysis provides useful, qualitative information regarding the delivery of IP-based services to various classes of clients.

Method of Video-Measurements of Traffic Flow Characteristics at a Road Junction

In the theory of traffic flows the main characteristics are: intensity, speed, and density.  They make it possible to use hydrodynamic models. In connection with the development of modern highways and road networks, traffic flows behavior is becoming more and more complex and diverse. In particular, the B.Kerner studies have shown that the laminar solution of hydrodynamic models is poorly corre...

Inferring Arrival Rate Statistics of Individual Flows from Aggregated-flow Rate Measurements

For a statistical perspective of global traffic flows on a large network, the authors have proposed a method for inferring unobservable arrival rate statistics of individual flows based solely on measurements of the aggregated-flow rates, which can be easily measured at some network links such as router interfaces. The above method, while having potential for inferring arrival rate statistics o...

Inferring the Presence of Reverse Proxies through Timing Analysis

This thesis presents a method for inferring the presence of a reverse proxy server using packet timing analysis from the vantage point of a client system. This method can determine whether Internet users are receiving web content from the actual source or from some potentially spoofed proxy device; leading to better risk assessment and understanding of the cyber terrain. By using only the measu...

Automatic Invariant Detection in Dynamic Web Applications

The complexity of modern web applications increases as client-side JavaScript and dynamic DOM programming are used to offer a more interactive web experience. In this paper, we focus on improving the dependability of such applications by automatically inferring invariants from the client-side and using those invariants for testing. By combining JavaScript code instrumentation and tracing we inf...

Orientation distribution of microlites in obsidian

The shape and three-dimensional orientation distribution of microlites are measured in obsidian from Little Glass Mountain, CA. Measurements are made from thin sections using an image series of high magnification digital micrographs taken serially through different focal depths. These measurements agree well with the theoretically predicted and experimentally measured distribution of long slend...
